Biking with Campagnolo Gran Fondo this weekend

Campagnolo Gran Fondo New York brings Italian style bike racing to NY.
Campagnolo Gran Fondo is a recognized name in the world of challenging bike rides in various countries around the world – Italy, Cozumel, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Columbia, Barcelona and Mont Ventoux. Gran Fondo’s are mass participation cycling events that, for decades, has enjoyed incredible popularity in Europe and is beginning to gain momentum in North America and beyond.
Fondos are often named after famous cyclists of the past, or after companies with a long heritage in cycling. Campagnolo is an Italian manufacturer of high ­end bicycle components, and the title sponsor of all Gran Fondos.
On Sunday May 17th, the first ever Gran Fondo New York championship ride happens. The one­ day event begins in New York City, travels up to Bear Mountain and finishes in Fort Lee, New Jersey, a challenging 100 ­mile route.

There are two ways to enjoy the day.
If you want to race, register for the GFNY 100, which is
approximately 100 miles, with 8,000 feet of climbing, and limited to 5,000 riders, This event is one of the largest competitive cycling events in the world, pitting athlete against athlete, the clock and your personal best.

If you want the adventure, without any competition, register for The GFNY Bear which is approximately 50 miles, 3,000 feet of climbing and has a cap of 1,000 riders. This groups rides to the half­ way mark, Bear Mountain, and is returned by bus to Fort Lee.
This year’s event will function as a fundraiser for Operation Smile, the international medical charity, and the official partner of Gran Fondo New York. Operation Smile’s medical volunteers provide free surgery for children all over the world who suffer from cleft lip, cleft palate and other life­threatening facial deformities. Your registration fee of $240 will transform their lives, giving them hope for a better future and a reason to smile.

Fundraising is required by the participants through sponsorship; details will be explained at registration.
There’s still time to register; visit the Campagnolo Gran Fondo New York pre ­race expo booth at the NYC Bike Expo at Penn Pavillion, on Friday, May 15th, from 11:00am to 8:00pm; last entry at 7:30pm. On Saturday, May 16th, the hours are from 11:00am to 6:00pm, with the last entry accepted at 5:30pm. These are the final hours for registration and to pick up admission packets.

The finish line is on Hudson Terrace at Strictly Bicycles, where both groups meet up. Awards ceremony and after ­race festivities will be held at Palisade Insterstate Park. A complementary, continuous 15 minute shuttle bus service will be available for spectators between the finish in Fort Lee and the 175th Street subway station in NYC.
